Why Natural, Organic and Non Toxic Beauty

Now a day many of us are aware of the benefits of eating whole foods that are grown without chemicals or genetically modified ingredients. Our health improves and overtime many benefits are gained as well as future health problems avoided. What is not as widely known or understood is the importance of using beauty and personal care products that are natural and organic. All it takes is a little time, education and common sense to realise that 90% of products found in the mainstream market contain ingredients that are potentially harmful, or just plain useless for health and beauty. Turn around your face cream, body wash or foundation, and tell me out of the many ingredients listed, which you recognize? In what order are they listed? And what exactly are they for and what do they do? Don’t feel bad if you understand the first ingredient, most likely water and then everything else becomes a blur. Most of us slather on these products without even considering what it is they truly are; we are assured by the claims made by these companies, and that is all we need. Becoming aware of what these ingredients are and where they come from is actually quite frightening. I am not here to scare you, but rather open your eyes to the truth that is often overlooked. Switching to brands that are natural, organic and non-toxic just makes sense. What we put on our bodies is absorbed and should be as nutritious and beneficial as the food we use to feed our bodies. Here are a few important ingredients to avoid when choosing your health and beauty products.

Imidazolidinyl Urea and Diazolidinyl Urea

Used as a preservative and antimicrobial, these ingredients release formaldehyde (yup the stuff used to preserve bodies after death) which happens to be carcinogenic, into health and beauty products. To top it off these ingredients can be derived from a pretty icky source, animal urine or other bodily fluids, um… gross!

Diethanolamine (DEA) /Triethanolamine (TEA)

Used as a PH balancer, surfactant and is found in fragrance. This ingredient is known to be highly irritating to eyes, skin and lungs and has been linked to organ toxicity.

Parabens: Ethyl, Butyl, Methyl, Propyl/ Parahydroxybenzoate

Parabens are used as a preservative. They mimic the female hormone estrogen and can be an endocrine disruptor. They have been shown to be an irritant for skin, eyes and lungs and been linked reproductive and organ toxicity.

Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulfate is used as a surfactant/ foaming agent in many beauty products. They strip natural hair and skin oils, irritate skin and have been linked to organ toxicity. There is also a contamination concern with the harmful 1.4 dioxane, which is a carcinogen.

Stearalkonium Chloride

Used as a preservative and surfactant this ingredient is a skin, eye and lung irritant and has been linked to organ toxicity.

Synthetic Fragrances

Try to avoid any mainstream fragrances, or products with added fragrance (if it is indicated from a natural source or essential oils it is ok) These fragrances contain endless amounts of unknown chemicals and ingredients that is protected by some fancy fragrance trade secret law. They contain phthalates which are known endocrine disruptors and have shown to cause neurological and reproductive damage.

Petrolatum/ Mineral oil

Used as a moisturizer and hair conditioner Petrolatum and Mineral oil are made from petroleum. They are linked to organ toxicity and also block skin pores and prevent the ability for the skin to breathe and function properly.

Triclosan

Used as an antibacterial and preservative, Triclosan is a known endocrine disruptor as well as an irritant to skin, eyes and lungs. It has also been linked to organ toxicity.

Propylene Glycol

Used as a skin conditioning agent, Propylene Glycol is a skin irritant and has been linked to contact dermatitis and other skin allergies.

Hydroquinone

Possible carcinogen may cause irreversible blue discolorations on skin.

Toluene

Toxic to respiratory, nervous, and respiratory systems
